    Summary Covid-19 is creating unique operating challenges for contact lens practice. These cases explore challenging aspects of contact lens practice highlighting evidence and guidance to help practitioners apply their clinical judgement in order to keep their patients and colleagues safe, while delivering a tailored, evidence-based contact lens service, which recognises the changes to wearer needs and priorities during the pandemic. About the presenters Andrew Symons FBDO(CL) FBCLA Andrew Contact Lens Business Manager (Scotland and North England) for Specsavers Optical Group. Formerly Senior Contact Lens Portfolio Manager. He was formerly Senior Professional Services Consultant at CooperVision where he liaised with practitioners to develop their knowledge and understanding of both clinical and business topics which help to develop their practice. Andrew has a wide industry experience having worked with three of the major contact lens manufacturers and in large busy practices as a CLO. He is a representative on the GOC stakeholder group on contact lens supply. Sharing his passion for contact lens ‘pro-activity’ he has authored, developed and delivered innovative CET-accredited lectures and interactive workshops on a wide variety of topics to Optical Societies, LOCs, Universities, ABDO CET days, company CET/CPD days in the UK, Europe and beyond. Jonathon Bench BSc(Hons) MCOptom FBCLA Jonathon is an optometrist, graduating from Cardiff University. He has worked as resident and mobile optometrist in both multiple and independent practices, and been a joint venture partner, before moving into contact lens category management. He also has experience of supporting eye care practitioners in both the UK and Canada to develop and enhance their contact lens business. Jonathon now works as Head of Professional Affairs for Alcon®, where amongst other things he looks after their in house (Alcon Academy) and in field professional development teams and offering; delivering training, support and education to eye care practitioners throughout the UK and Ireland. In 2015 Jonathon was elected to serve on BCLA council, and now sits on their Executive Committee, holding the position of President from June 2019. Through this and other commitments to the Optometric profession, he has also been part of working parties at the General Optical Council (GOC). Christina Olner BScOptom(Hons) MCOptom MBCLA Christina is a qualified optometrist with several years’ experience in both multiple and independent settings. She has worked for numerous years in leadership roles in the multiple sector, delivering training and development to optometrists, CLOs and DOs at all stages of their learning. Her roles have included responsibilities for governance and clinical complaint handling at practice level. She has also been a regional representative for clinicians in the field. Christina currently works as a Professional Services Consultant for CooperVision where she works closely with practices and practitioners to deliver excellence in contact lens knowledge and customer journey initiatives. Neil Retallic BSc(Hons) MCOptom FBCLA FIACLE Neil is the European Professional Services Director for Menicon and an Assessor and Examiner for the College of Optometrists. His previous roles include Professional Services Manager for CooperVision, Learning and Development Manager for Vision Express, Optometry Teaching Fellow for the University of Manchester and Visiting Lecturer at Aston University. He has been involved with various organisations across the sector and is currently part of the GOC Education Committee, Chair of the BCLA Education Committee and immediate Past Chair of the British and Irish University and College Contact Lens Educators. He has been awarded fellowships from the BCLA and IACLE. Ms Meena Puar BSc(Hons) MCOptom FBCLA Meena is a qualified optometrist and dispensing optician. In June 2017 she also gained her fellowship for the British Contact Lens association. She currently works as a Professional affairs consultant for Thea Pharmaceuticals Limited and locums at an independent practice. She has also worked as a Professional Services Manager for Leightons Opticians and Hearing Care. This role involved refining and improving all touch points in the customer experience and customer journey, Leading and motivating ECPs in elevating clinical service offering by improving their knowledge and confidence, to monitor and improve each ECP’s performance using coaching and motivational support to deliver both clinical and commercial improvements in all areas of sales and KPI’s.

    Learning objectives 1.1.2 Practitioners will have an enhanced understanding of questioning techniques to explore signs and symptoms during a remote contact lens patient interaction, in order to make appropriate decisions about the ongoing care of the patient during Covid-19 restrictions 2.7.5 Practitioners will have a deeper understanding of how to make decisions about the care of contact lens patients which are consistent with current professional guidance during COVID-19 5.1.2 Optometrists and 5.2.1 CLOs will be able to deliver and manage the delivery of advice to neophyte contact lens wearers to overcome initial problems with contact lens wear and maintain concordance in a way which is consistent with Covid-19 practice guidance. 5.2.1 Optometrists will have an enhanced understanding of how to explore symptoms and elicit information to enable them to provide tailored advice and appropriate management to address concerns and problems experienced by the contact lens wearer which present during a remote aftercare. 5.4.2 CLOs will have an enhanced understanding of how to explore symptoms and elicit information to enable them to provide tailored advice and appropriate management to address concerns and problems experienced by the contact lens wearer which present during a remote aftercare. 6.1.4 Optometrists will have an enhanced understanding of how to assess and manage patients with risk factors, signs and symptoms of dry eye.
